Yet another inspiring story Bianca. It clearly outlines how underestimating what young people are capable of has become a habit for so many of us, and how kids will always exceed our expectations, either high OR low. That the year 9's felt drawn in by having an actual public audience (real world outcome), relaxed, and became genuinely playful, is a powerful illustration of how PBL can deliver opportunities for people to shine.

For a school like North Star, geographically isolated, technologically challenged and a tendency for insular thinking, projects such as this are an important way to get the students thinking beyond the fairly small world we inhabit. Our students have enjoyed connecting via Twitter and the videos. They were also genuinely disappointed when we couldn't get Skype up and working the first time. With just over a week to get our life stories designed and created, the Skype session will serve as a motivating tool as well. Very excited to see what the student's begin planning this week.

Great info here! I am strongly considering Edmodo here in a 4th grade math class. However, I am still not sure how math assignments can be posted/uploaded in Edmodo in a way that they can fill out and send back to me. What forms of math assignments have math teachers used with Edmodo? We often use activity sheets that are often scanned into PDF form as homework and I have heard that even Adobe Acrobat has difficulty taking scanned PDF's in converting them into word docs even with the subscription service. Any insight and ideas about math assignments with Edmodo would be appreciated!

So great to discover your blog Bianca! I love it. One of the great challenges of using student centred, contemporary approaches to teaching is to find frameworks/descriptors that help articulate what it is "all about" and to pull together what can seem like fragmented (though complimentary) approaches, tools and strategies. Where PBL is your meta-organiser...mine is Inquiry based learning. I use inquiry as the 'big picture' philosophy, pedagogy and planning framework that "hosts" project based, problem based, early years discovery learning, design thinking, etc. So interesting to explore ways to meaningfully synthesise...thank you for your post and for contributing to my own thinking.
